Aremark municipality is facing an exciting future with the possibility of becoming a host municipality for the storage of waste from Norway's nuclear facilities. Through its partnership in the Decommissioning and Reuse Cluster (DECOM), the municipality can build the necessary expertise in the storage of nuclear waste while strengthening its social role and contributing to the cluster's progress and development.

Municipal Director Andreas Lervik sees great opportunities if the border municipality is chosen as a national storage site for nuclear waste. Here he talks briefly about the value he sees for the municipality in being a member of the DECOM cluster.
Tell us briefly about the company's business and your role.
Aremark is located along the Swedish border in southeastern Østfold and borders the neighboring municipalities of Halden, Rakkestad and Marker. The Halden watercourse and Villmarksveien road run parallel through the municipality, and Aremark is an eldorado for canoeists, fishing enthusiasts and other outdoor lovers.
Aremark is a relatively large cabin municipality with around 700 cabins and holiday homes. At the end of the year, the municipality had just over 1,300 inhabitants, according to figures from Statistics Norway.
As Municipal Director, I am responsible for leading and managing the municipality's day-to-day operations, as well as implementing the strategic decisions made by the municipal council.
What goals is Aremark municipality working towards?
Aremark municipality is one of two candidates being considered as a host municipality for the future storage of waste from Norway's nuclear facilities. This opportunity means that we can play a central role in national waste management, which can lead to economic growth and new jobs in our region.
Can you tell us about a success story or an exciting project Aremark Municipality has implemented?
Our project is to facilitate a possible interim and permanent storage of nuclear waste in the "right" place in our municipality. For us, this creates value in that such a facility will generate permanent jobs and possible migration to the municipality as a result.
What is Aremark municipality's motivation for being a member of the Decommissioning and Reuse Cluster? What type of collaboration is of interest to you?
"Our motivation for participating in DECOM is to build expertise in relation to the storage of nuclear waste. But we also see that we have a social role, and that our participation will help to strengthen the cluster overall.
