Norsk Kjernekraft AS aims to build, own and operate nuclear power plants in Norway. Before they can apply for a license, they must put in place decommissioning plans and waste programs that show that they know how to handle decommissioning and waste from the power plants. Through the DECOM cluster, they have the opportunity to influence the level of expertise of Norwegian suppliers in these areas and share their own knowledge.
Tell us briefly about the company's business and your role.
Our goal is to build, own and operate nuclear power plants in Norway. In short, I work to facilitate this. My main areas of work are regulatory framework conditions, waste management, contact with the authorities, market dialog and communication.
What goals is Norsk Kjernekraft working towards?
Starting the impact assessment process for our first nuclear power plants, and then for waste facilities.
Tell us about a success story or an exciting project Norsk Kjernekraft has completed.
"There are a lot of exciting things happening at the moment. We have projects underway in Aure, Heim, Narvik, Vardø, Øygarden, Austrheim and Halden. We have completed a feasibility study on nuclear power in Norway in which we describe the legislation, regulatory framework, expertise and many other prerequisites that Norway has for starting with nuclear power.
"We've written a report describing the potential for electrifying oil and gas installations using nuclear power. This is highly topical with regard to Melkøya. The potential is huge, to say the least. The power grid in Finnmark, the Bergen area (to Kollsnes), Haugalandet (Kårstø) and Central Norway (Tjeldbergodden-Halten area) is too fragile, and hydropower does not have sufficient power to provide any alternatives beyond nuclear and gas power.
In Western Norway, we have inspected a drilling rig and a plot of land that we can use to test the technology for disposing of radioactive waste in deep boreholes. This could be a real industrial adventure for the Norwegian supplier industry.
What is Norsk Kjernekraft's motivation for being a member of the Decommissioning and Reuse Cluster? What type of collaboration is of interest to you?
"When we build nuclear power plants, we have to draw up decommissioning plans and waste programs before we apply for a license. It is therefore in our interest that there are competent Norwegian suppliers in these areas. We want to participate in projects where we can contribute to building expertise in the industry while solving our own needs.
